Shark – Tokyo User Research

To launch a new product in Japan, Shark asked us to test their product propositions with Japanese consumers.

After preparing a research protocol, stimulation materials and recruiting interviewees, we completed in-home consumer interviews in Tokyo over a 3 day period. These were conducted entirely in Japanese and recorded using video, photography and hand notes.

Afterwards we synthesised the data and via Zoom delivered an ‘executive summary’ highlighting the good and bad of their product concepts as well as pointing at potential market opportunities.

The outcome fundamentally changed Shark’s perception of Japanese consumers, how they live in and how this product would be used and positioned. It’s not a stretch to say without implementing our advice the product would fail in Japan.
